The first time I read something about the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, I clipped the article so I could write about it. I understand the interest in drawing attention to our expanding waistlines – and those of our children. But it is so frustrating that people in Congress believe that the solution is to regulate our choices at the end of our food supply instead of at the beginning (subsidies).
In our school district’s newsletter, one of the mandates is described as: “a fruit or vegetable must be on each student’s lunch tray to make the meal reimbursable through federal funding.”
Unless the federal Department of Agriculture is going to mandate the eating of said fruit or vegetable, what do you think the likely outcome will be?
